DEP Fabrications worked with Fine Artist and Illustrator, Louisa E Phillips, in the creation of Polly – a degree show sculpture transforming Perspex® Opal 050 into a geometric design. The Perspex Approved Fabricators helped to develop the artist’s sketches to ultimately produce a concept unlike anything previously created.
Artist Louisa Phillips explains “The concept of the artwork stands as a depiction of how technology has led to an ‘idealised’ form of the human figure and how technology has deconstructed the beauty standards of the past which were more realistic proportions of the human figure.”
The complicated geometric design involved many fabrication calculations from the experts at DEP, to create the required shapes, with the added complication that the sculpture was also illuminated. Perspex® Opal 050 was chosen for its light transmission qualities. The angled joints were bonded together and these thinner sections of greater light transmission created channels of brightness extenuating the joints and individual sections.
Finally, red LEDs were used to produce the appearance of a beating heart in the chest of the body.
