Industrial model makers MC Modelmaking, were tasked with producing an interactive model of London’s Tower Bridge for the Tower Bridge Museum. The child friendly structure needed to be sturdy yet lightweight so Palight PVC Foam was chosen to create the iconic structure.
Designed for an educational day at the museum, the bridge was to be to be taken through its paces with children expected to get hands on with the model and drive toy buses across the model bridge, jump the gap etc. The modelmaking team chose to build the construction using Palight PVC Foam in 10mm due to its rigidity and its smooth fabricated finish with the design being CNC cut before being bonded and screwed together. The flat surface meant the final vinyl graphics could be applied smoothly. The important aspect of the bridge – the tilting bascules – were designed and fabricated in Palight, using acrylic washers and bolts to make the two rigid swinging pieces of road an effective, light-weight interactive part of the model.
Palight PVC foam is widely used in applications from model making, to direct printing and exhibition graphics. Our range of stocked white Palight is available in thicknesses from 1mm – 25mm, whilst the range also includes a number of colour and specialist finishes.
MC Modelmakers have been working with designers and museums for over 20 years and are now based in Chatham’s Historic Dockyard.
