South West London based approved fabricators, Abplas, have recently been explaining how they have adapted to life supplying protective screens for local businesses.
Working with Perspex® cast acrylic and Palsun Polycarbonate, Abplas have been fabricating Covid-19 protective products non-stop since March, adapting their designs to create a bespoke, easy to use screen for multiple business settings. A flat pack design was developed that slots together and is secured with a simple clear screw; meaning it can be easily shipped and assembled by the end users on site.
Matthew Buckley, MD at Abplas explains, “We came up with a design that is easy to assemble, as it simply slots together. We were aware that many of our customers are hoping these will not become a permanent fixture and therefore wanted to purchase free standing screens. The freestanding aspect of our screens also makes them perfect for glass counters and other surfaces that are unable to take fixings.
We have incorporated thicker legs in our sneeze screen design, thus making our guards heavy, sturdy and really strong. Once our screens are constructed, they stay in place. We also wanted to make our design easy to distribute and able to be put together quickly. That is why our screens are flat packed and no tools are required during assembly.”
Responding to a recent surge in requests from hair dressing salons, Abplas have recently tweaked the design of their free standing guards to provide full length protection with the screen raised 100mm from the ground to enable easy regular floor cleaning.
Matthew Buckley continues “We have been working hard to meet demand. Initially our customers were mainly hospitals, pharmacies, doctors' surgeries and convenience stores as they were the only places open at the beginning of lockdown. Over recent months, we have been supplying offices, council buildings and schools as they prepare to return to work.”
