High-Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) is a premium-grade polystyrene designed to offer exceptional durability with up to seven times the impact resistance of standard general-purpose polystyrene. Its versatile nature makes it ideal for various applications, including thermoforming, extrusion, vacuum forming, and heat bending, allowing it to be transformed into virtually any shape.
HIPS is created through the polymerisation of styrene monomers, which are derived from benzene and ethylene, components found in petroleum. During the manufacturing process, butadiene rubber is added to the polystyrene. This addition enhances its flexibility, strength, and impact resistance, making it a superior material for applications requiring enhanced durability.
While both HIPS and general-purpose polystyrene share common properties, their applications vary significantly. Standard polystyrene, known for its rigidity, is frequently used in products such as plastic cutlery or CD cases. However, it is prone to brittleness and breakage. HIPS, on the other hand, incorporates rubber polymers, making it more flexible and suitable for impact-resistant uses. This key difference positions HIPS as the preferred choice for applications requiring greater durability.
For creating permanent bends or curves, a process called heat bending or thermoforming is used. By carefully heating the material until it softens, HIPS becomes highly malleable and can be shaped into various forms. To retain the material's integrity, it is essential to control the temperature during heating and cooling, as excessive heat or rapid cooling can cause cracking or warping.
Colour Options: At Perspex, our standard colour selection includes white, black, and silver mirror finishes. However, HIPS can be manufactured in nearly any colour to suit specific requirements.
Impact Resistance: With up to seven times the impact resistance of general-purpose polystyrene, HIPS ensures robustness and durability across various applications.
Fabrication Versatility: When heated, HIPS can be easily shaped, moulded, and extruded into diverse forms, making it ideal for thermoforming and other manufacturing processes.
High Rigidity: Once shaped and set, HIPS exhibits impressive rigidity, withstanding substantial pressure without cracking or deforming.
At Perspex, we take pride in offering high-quality High-Impact Polystyrene sheets tailored to meet your specific project needs. From enhanced impact resistance to versatile fabrication capabilities, HIPS is the perfect solution for projects demanding flexibility, strength, and durability.
